A proposal to build a new urban area while conserving and protecting an important Nature Reserve.
The proposal for a new urban development in the southeastern part of Uppsala raised many alerts because many buildings were proposed over a high-value area, the Lunden Nature Reserve. Lunden Nature Reserve remains an extensive forest close to the Urban area.
Initial development proposal and natural value.
The intervention also included a new train station and a tram connection crossing the east-west area. Our task here was to propose strategic modifications while keeping a similar housing area.

To prioritise forest conservation, this proposal had the following principles:
Land sparing. Save and preserve high-value natural areas for species that need large green areas.
Make nature experience accessible. Bring quality nature to the urban with wider wedges where people can pass and stay.
Manage stormwater locally. Water management is a starting point for creating good conditions for nature in urban areas.
Integrate the green, blue and grey infrastructures.
Provide habitat to generic species in urban areas so they can use it as a safe stepping stone: welcoming birds, bats, pollinators, mushrooms and mycelium.
Redistribution from the municipality proposal.

Actions.
Densification of existing infrastructure. Infillning following topography.
Recolocate the train station and the new tram lines closer to the existing developments.
Develop it with phases.
Allow wider green wedges and create stepping stones.
