Located on the edge of Uppsala, between the industrial area and the Nature Reserve of Kungsängensgård. It represents an opportunity to improve the physical connectivity of this area and bridge the gap between the city and research practice through grouping recreation and research facilities.
We proposed a HUB & Living Lab to innovatively develop the area of Kungängensgård in Uppsala, with a focus on exploring sustainable living practices.

Focus areas of intervention

Main program in the areas
Five key focus areas with different functions were explored, and the water park responded to remediation: Cleaning polluted water and soil.
A sanitary field located in the natural water flow required topographical work to direct flushed rainwater from the industrial area to the river, through a system of ponds that naturally clean the water. Additionally, the water park system can serve as a natural water retaining system during heavy rainfalls.
Water treatment process
The treatment process already starts with a linear park by the main road that collects the water. Three connected sedimentation ponds at the beginning are the first filter for sediments.
The possibility of testing different systems for filtering water, such as a built well filter, a technical solution, and a built wetland with filtering capacity, a nature-based solution, are at the core of the Living Lab water treatment park.
After this, the water process integrates into the recreational part of the park by progressively naturalising shapes and materials.
Dynamic paths explorations
The elevated path is the main axis to cross the whole area and the topographical variability.
